Job Searching Skills: Tips for Ability Test
First, you must ask your friends who have done that company's tests before. Ask them who is the test publisher. Once you get the information, go to the publisher's website and CHECK all information regarding their tests. Some publishers even have their trail tests, which just exactly like a real test. You can try their samples too. They are good enough for you to have a sense of familarity so that you can do faster when it comes to the real test.
Here is some useful links:
http://www.shl.com/SHL/en-int/CandidateHelpline/ (this company prepares the Ability Test for British American Tobacco and Standard Chartered)
http://www.pg.com.pk/careers/apply_problemsolvingtest.shtml (usually, the company that you are applying have links to the sample tests)
Second, if you have free time, go to http://www.google.com and type "IQ test". Doing some IQ tests a few days before the real test will have you to warm up and keep your mind responsive. Alternatively, you can do some offline tests in these books:
Book of IQ Tests (Ken Russel and Philip Carter)
IQ and Psychometric Tests (Philip Carter)
Just don't focus too much on it because IQ tests are quite different FROM Ability Tests. Doing 10 IQ questions is good enough, at least to me.
Third, be confident as Ability Tests don't have complicated math fomulas. They are just normal + , - , x , / .
Fourth, shit before going for the tests. Believe me, you don't have time for it later. And remember to bring your own calculators, pencils, and erasers as well. Your familiarity with these things help you to boost the speed.
Fifth, resist the temptation to look back during the tests. You don't have time for that luxury. Usually, you have half to a minute for each question. So keep saying to yourself "It's over and I believe I did it right. Looking back will make me do the next questions wrongly."
Sixth, use your intuition. It does help a lot. If you are good at numbers, do numerical session first and vice versa. Doing what you are more confident first will build up your confidence and reduce the time taking the test.
Seventh, don't use your intuition when it comes to charts questions. Don't get panic and be lazy. You have enough time to do seem-long-and complicated charts.
Eighth, watch your watch. When you realize that you have exactly 1min left and you still have plenty of unanswered questions, tick all. Lucky lady may be with you. Some tests are long enough to test your mentality (i.e. to see whether you can stay calm when the deadline comes)
Ninth, in SHL tests, as you see the above pictures, same charts are used for many questions but the questions are not GROUP together. You will find it difficult to follow because, say, you use chart 1 to answer question 1, chart 2 to answer question 2, chart 3 to answer question 3, then you have to use chart 1 again to answer question 4. It costs you time because you have to turn the booklet many times. One trick is to do one chart at a time, skip questions of other charts. This helps you to increase your accuracy and speed.
Last, act now. I found the verbal sessions in Ability Tests is always the most difficult because of my slow reading rate. For those who are not good in English, you should try to read a novels or read the rapid reading book (e.g. Triple your reading speed by Wade E. Cutler). It helps you to do the tests faster
